. students gathering to mourn two more classmates. the pain of saying goodbye has become part of everyday now in newtown. this grieving community buried two more at first graders today. jessica rekos led to plan and organize so much, their family calls per their ceo. james mattioli ended most of his days cuddled on the couch with his mom. >> they kept saying -- the boy had a big gun and a little gun. i could not -- i could not fathom what they were talking about. >> he found the boys huddled in his yard after they ran past the gunman to escape. >> the two boys just started talking. i had no idea what happened. they said "we can go back into the school." -- we cannot go back into the school. because our teacher is gone." >> students did go back today, except those from sandy hook elementary. every campus had extra security. >> i do not think you are ever ready. i think that as much as things can get back to normal, we have to. >> though most here to understand that normal mean something very different now. but what can be a normal when you are talking about burying 6 and 7-year-old kids. one o

is still deeply mourning the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. the president struck an almost impossible balance of heartfelt emotion and out ragrage. the weight of the moment. no american can relive the horror of this. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex and that is true. no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for an action. surely we can do better than this. >> this is a moment in history where an event alters the direction of a country and moves lawmakers to unity. dianne feinstein was the first to announce an update on an assault weapons ban which she introduced in congress and will introduce it early next year. >> i intend to introduce a bill. and i intend one way or another, no matter how long it takes, to get that bill through. there's one thing i'm sure of. that in the absence of doing something, that is sound, that is practical, that is work
. we all mourn the loss. we see the problem and it's happened in other countries as well. we look for something, okay, what can prevent it? i think that's where we need to go with this discussion, yes, put gun control, more gun control on the table. but also don't forget the mental health element. don't forget, is there a home situation that we need to learn more about. you know, was this young man addicted to violent video games? was there a hollywood influence? i think that we can't just stop at guns. we need to put the whole thing on the table. you know, you know when you drop your child off at school, you want to know that he or she is going to be safe all day long. >> so when you talk about the fact you think more gun control may be a topic to debate right now. there are certainly a number of politicians who have been pro-gun rights in the past. they're now advocating for gun control including senator joe manchin who fired a gun in this ad right here. we're watching it here. they are changing their tune a bit. i want to remind everybody. take a listen. >> i don't know anyone
that have come out of this tragedy? >> well, first of all, i think that this entire nation is mourning. and we need to go through that grieving process. and allow that to happen. and then i do think we need to move rapidly, the dialogue on a number of areas. certainly, there's going to be those who want to talk immediately about gun control and gun legislation. and i think that our party has a responsibility to be part of that discussion. but i also think we have to look at things like mental illness. and their rights. and how do we make sure that guns are not thrown into the wrong hands. i think we have to look at school safety and, frankly, we have to look at the culture that promotes violence and say, are we making mistakes there and do we need to change in that area as well. i think there's a lot of areas that we need to have a national debate and dialogue and i think republicans need to be aggressive in being part of that discussion. >> well, steve, do you think that part of the problem for those who have looked at this as an opportunity to make change, and look at the polls, fran
